A radical’s meaning is almost always a clue to the meaning of the whole character it appears in — 河 (river), 海 (ocean), and 洗 (to wash) all use the water radical (氵) because they’re all about water. When you hit an unfamiliar character on the exam, identifying its radical is often faster than trying to recall the character from memory.
