Conjugate the verb in parentheses in either the passato prossimo or the imperfetto, depending on what the sentence needs. 18 sentences, answer key at the bottom.
Passato Prossimo vs. Imperfetto
Passato Prossimo
Completed, one-time action
Use for an action with a clear beginning and end — something that happened and finished.
Imperfetto
Ongoing, habitual, or background
Use for repeated past actions, descriptions, and background scenes — "used to" or "was/were -ing."
Together
L'imperfetto descrive la scena, il passato prossimo la interrompe
The classic pattern: "Mentre leggevo (imperfetto), il telefono ha squillato (passato prossimo)."

Verbs like sapere and conoscere actually change meaning depending on which past tense you use — "sapevo" means "I knew" but "ho saputo" means "I found out." Those pairs show up on the exam specifically because picking the wrong tense changes the sentence’s meaning, not just its grammar.
